Don’t worry- we aren’t skipping Thanksgiving. According to Social Media, people get really upset about early Christmas decor and music. We’re just busy people (aren’t we all), so I️ try to savor every moment of the Christmas season, and I️ just adore Christmas.
I adore it for multiple reasons. It’s a wonderful time to celebrate the birth of our Savior Who so humbly left His throne in Heaven to come to earth in such a humble manner. It’s a great time to ponder the fact God sent His Son for you and me, That’s an incredible love that is so hard to grasp, but it is the way He loves us. (I’m going to pause and apologize. My keyboard is turning capital i’s into exclamation points and a’s. I’m not sure what that’s about, or how it will show up to you.) Christmas decor, scents, and songs bring back some of my most fond childhood memories. Momma would let me put a tree in my room. I was ridiculous. I️ would tape lights ALL the way around my room. Many, many rolls of Scotch time ended their roll in my room. We always put a real tree in our big den, and we had a cat that LOVED to climb it. One year, many ornaments were sacrificed. I, to no one’s surprise, obnoxiously insisted on listening to Christmas music (CDs y’all) while we decorated. Leeah and I usually got put on untangling lights duty, and that got old quickly. I LOVED finding the ornaments we made in school and reminiscing. Every Christmas Eve we loaded up and went to Grandma’s. We watched old family movies (I remember thinking they were boring because they had no sound, but as I got older, I realized how special they were). We eventually started the tradition of steak dinner, and that was always exciting to look forward to. Christmas morning, we celebrated together and headed to Granny’s. I vividly remember my life size Barbie and first bicycle (it was purple and had handle tassels- not my first choice now, but it was totes my jam then). Last week, I requested Yellow Car Boy and I decorate together because it was the first weekend we didn’t have major plans (outside of cleaning, going to the grocery, and grading papers). He, of course, agreed. As we got the tree and decorations down, I couldn’t help but grin ear to ear. As we put the decorations on the tree, it was so, so sweet to remember who had given us each one, or where we had gotten them. There was an engagement one, a first Christmas, and a first house, and I was reminded how precious marriage is and how exciting it is to have so many firsts together. It is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season and lose sight of what we’re celebrating. For me, Christmas is joy. While we should recognize and remember Christ’s birth every day, it is a sweet time to really reflection the miracle of His earthly birth. The family traditions of Jordan’s and my family, and the ones we’ve began ourselves are precious to me. Visiting with family and friends is extra special during this season. And again, there are childhood memories galore. I’m so thankful for my Savior and every sweet memory I have from this special time of year. So I’m ok decorating the first week of November. Trust me, I’ll eat turkey and dressing and continue being thankful.
